We had a nice Hanukkah party Sunday night. My step-mom made her usual yummy brisket and latkes.

Here is the majority of my haul. I also got a picture my step-sister made, a calendar and an Amazon gift card. My step-mom also made a gorgeous, colorful scarf.

Yesterday we walked over the shopping street a few blocks away and after a stop at Starbucks, wandered around the independent bookstore. They have a fun way of naming the sections.

I picked up copies of the first thee books in the Miss Peregrine series for $7.99 each.

In the afternoon we went to see Rogue One. I liked it much more than I expected to. Without being spoilery, I really liked how it fit into the overall saga. After the movie I got my Rocky Rocco's pizza fix.

Today we're going to an art museum that features Wisconsin artists. The featured artist does photo-realism paintings.

Fun visit

I had a really nice visit with [livejournal.com profile] snogged today. We met up halfway between her home and my dad's house to see the movie Sing and then we had lunch at Culver's. The movie was cute and heartwarming. We exchanged presents over lunch. I'm excited to read the book she gave me: Heartless by Marisa Meyer.

I've gotten my parents hooked on This is Us. Last night I insisted that they watch the first episode On Demand because they weren't watching it. We then watched three more. They'll be all caught up by the end of the weekend. :)

Tomorrow I will make my grandmother's Sour Cream Cookies.

I hope everyone is having a good pre-holiday week.

Dammit! I lost one of my rings somewhere between my desk and my car. I'd noticed it was pretty loose earlier today and when I got in my car to go home it wasn't on my finger. Ran back up to my office but no sign of it and no one had turned it in to security (yet). I'll tell HR tomorrow, but it's probably gone for good.

So I made Lemon Blueberry pancakes for dinner. Partly for comfort, partly because it's National Pancake Day, and partly because there are pancakes in the story I beta'd today. (Go [livejournal.com profile] angelskuuipo's MCU story.)

It's been a busy week offline.

Last night I saw Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre with [livejournal.com profile] singinglark, her daughter, and my co-worker CW. It was fantastic. Very powerful pieces.

And of course I was in FL visiting my family. I had a lovely time staying with my cousins Saturday and Sunday. Well, the driver from the Peruvian restaurant we ordered dinner from couldn't find the house, ignoring the directions my cousin's wife texted him. We got our food 2 hours after we ordered it, and it wasn't even that good. She also introduced me to the show Younger. It was pretty funny. Watch the S1 trailer; the show is in it's second season, I think.

On Sunday we went to Butterfly World. One landed on my aunt. The baby in the photo is my baby cousin. See Photos. )

My mom picked me up on Monday and we went to visit her parents' graves. Then we went to see my step-grandma. She was tired, so we only stayed an hour, but it was good to visit with her. She says she's ready, even though she's not sick, she's 95. Her body doesn't work the way she wants it too. It's a bit of a curse having an intact mind and a body that doesn't let you engage it.

Work wasn't too crazy when I got back. It had been pretty slow while I was gone so it only took me one day to catch up.

Now I need to spend my weekend working on the last chapter of my LoT 5 Times fic and also watching the new season of Daredevil.

ETA: Also, I might need this Deadpool shirt.

Not in my apartment, but in my state. Permanently. She and my step-dad arrived on Monday. They didn't bring all their stuff out yet, just the kitchen stuff, some comfy chairs a bed and a card table and chairs. My step-dad will be completely remodeling the first floor, knocking down walls, adding a bathroom, etc.

Their house is an hour north of me in Gloucester, MA. Yesterday I went up to spend the day with them. We had lunch and then my mom and I walked through the cemetery behind the house, through some woods, to the ocean. There are large rocks leading down to the water. We sat on the rocks for a bit before heading back. Then we drove into Rockport, the next town over from them. We found a place to park and walked around the touristy area. I got some Raspberry Lemonade taffy at a candy store. My asked me to stay for dinner too, so I did.

It was a nice day. It'll be interesting living in the same state. I've been out here for 15 years and while part of me is still a little nervous about us being so close, at least she's an hour away. My mom and I get along better when we don't see each other all the time. At least that used to be true.

Photos )

I can't decide what to do today. I officially need to go buy new jeans because my old ones finally died at the inner thighs. But I also need to make cookies (or something) with my dead bananas because they're stinky. But I also need to clean my apartment because my mom is staying with me Wednesday night while she is leading a tour and the group is staying in a hotel a few blocks from me. (I'm going to join the tour next weekend when they go up to Maine and go to the Portland Art Museum where we'll tour Winslow Homer's home. Except I'll be driving myself 3 hours up there since they're going from New Hampshire and I'll be going from home.) My calves hurt from walking up and down hills yesterday, so I don't want to walk around shopping, so that probably isn't going to happen. So cleaning and baking it will be. Even if it is really sunny out today.

I'm home

Bet most of you didn't even know I was gone. I took a quick trip to visit my family over the weekend. The goal for the weekend was to go through my stuff that's in my mom's basement. My brother and his girlfriend came in for the weekend too. Read more... )

Today I saw Neil Gaiman speak at the MFA. ::bounces:: I got there an hour early and was about 50 people back in line. There was an older woman a couple people back who is a member and she kept gushing about how great it was to get people like Neil Gaiman to speak at the museum to bring in all these young people. Admittedly, even though I've been a member for 10 years I haven't been there for almost a year.

They let us in half an hour before showtime and I got a seat in the 4th row, behind the row of Reserved seating. The event was sold out, with an overflow room with a video feed set up. Check out my view: )

He talked about how he loved myths. How myths were like compost - they start out as a belief and become history and then just stories that turn to dust, only to be built upon and fuel new ideas.

He talked about lots of other stuff, then brought it back to myths.

He was as funny and witty as you'd expect.

He even read us a new story from a secret project.

His voice is truly hypnotic. I think I may need to get every audiobook he's done for his own books to listen to him read them.

Oh, and his wife, Amanda Palmer, sat in the seat directly in front of me just before Neil came out. :)

* I left a comment for the mods on my [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles sign-up post that I won't make my posting day tomorrow. As much as I hated to do it, anything I tried to throw together today would look like it was thrown together and the story I started is nowhere near ready to see the light of day. At least there is someone else signed up for the day and I do have a second date on the 23rd.

* To assuage my guilty conscience, I went to see the new Harry Potter movie. I went by myself because I couldn't wait to make plans to go. I'd be willing to see it again. Without giving anything away, I cried a lot. I always seem to when emotions are high.

* Went to a BBQ at former co-worker's (DM) new house last night. He & his wife have a very cute house with a great back yard. He said that he'd go car shopping with me when I get around to finally going for test drives. He used to sell cars and he'll be able to help me not get screwed over. Now I just need to make some appointments to do some test drives. In addition to testing the new Rav4 Sport, I'm also now leaning towards the Nissan Murano. It's pretty.

* It seems like no one is interested in going to see American Idiot with me in January. I just got my pre-order email a couple of days ago and have been asking my usual theatre buddies. So far no one is interested. Guess I'll be going by myself because this is one that I have be dying to see.

I went to the noon showing of Stephen Sondheim's Company - the 3rd of 4 showings. If you can, I highly recommend you go on the 21st. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Hendricks, Stephen Colbert, Martha Plimpton, Jon Cryer and Patti LuPone. Now I need to see if I can find the CD from this performance.

Then I had my favorite Strawberry Poppyseed salad at Panera. (I love summer.) The weather was absolutely gorgeous, so I sat outside in the shade and caught up with reading my Twitter feed (which I am terrible about doing). When I was done, I ran into the Target next door and picked up Season 3 of Leverage.

Next I had every intention of going to test drive cars, but that didn't happen. I went to the dealership that was out that way but pulled into the Used Cars lot first. The guy there told me to go two doors down to the New lot, but when I got there, there was no clear place for Customers to park, so I left. I'll go to the dealership that I pass going home from work (on my alternate route) after work next week. I just hope they have all the models I want to test drive. I plan on getting a new Rav4, but I want to test the differences between the Base 4cyl, Sport 4cyl and Sport V6. From online research, I'm leaning towards a Sport model.

I swung by the bank and cashed a check at the ATM before I ran into the grocery store to get creamer for work.

Now I'll watch more Firefly episodes until the season finale of Game of Thrones.

Oh yeah, and Happy Father's Day! (I called my dad before the movie this morning.)

I feel like I should go out, but just don't want to. I didn't leave the apartment yesterday and it's sunny again today, so I should go out. Right? But I don't really wanna. I still have TV shows to catch up on and a beta to do. If I went out, I'd just be going to Walmart, they have the camera I want in stock. And maybe I'd try to go to see a movie. But if I stay in, maybe I'll finally make the recipe I've been wanting to make but keep telling myself I don't have time for.

I think I'm feeling a bit off because I woke up around 7am this morning when work thoughts interrupted my dreams. I spent the next hour tossing and turning trying to convince myself that I couldn't do anything about this thought at 7am on a Sunday. Eventually I did fall back asleep and then had to drag myself out of bed around 9:30, even though I probably could have lazed around for a lot longer.

Why did I only give myself 5 days before announcing winners at the SunnyD Awards? When I went to check the dates at the site to see how I was doing on time I discovered that I said winners were to be announded on February 11th. Obviously, they're gonna be late. I just finished tallying all of the votes today. Still need to make templates and do the new layout.

And before anyone offers to help, thank you, but I'll be fine. I have a system for making the awards once I get the template set up and it should go pretty quickly. The next round is a character I already have tons of photos of, so I just need to choose the ones I want to use and crop them, then pick a new (similar - because I'm not going to change the homepage header) color scheme. I'm a control freak and don't delegate well.

This means that I will probably be in hiding this week. Half the reason I got little done last week was that I was reading and/or chatting when I got home from work/Curves. Work was insanely busy last week due to Andrea leaving and then getting our accounts for next week's job fair dropped on our desks on Thursday. We didn't even have a whole week to get used to the additional work before even more was handed out. And this time there were only two of us to split the job fair accounts. Good thing it's the smallest one we've had in a long time.

But this means that I'll be really busy at work all week, so I can't read during the day. Plus, I'll be out of the office all day working at the job fair on Tuesday. So reading will have to be done at night, after working on SunnyD. I'll most likely fall behind, so you've been warned. I probably will do even less commenting on LJs than normal, too.

I will be posting a couple of fics though. My story for the No Pressure Giles Ficathon is "due" on Wednesday, but it's finished. I then plagerized it and turned it into a Paire fic, which will also be posted this week around Valentine's Day.

I've had a fairly productive day considering I got less sleep than usual. I went to Curves, did some beta'ing, did some ::gasp:: writing, and made a new banner/icon for [livejournal.com profile] willowstills, which I then used in a new layout.

My power went out this afternoon. Actually, it went out twice. The first time was just for a second, the second time was for nearly two hours. I called the power company after it didn't come back up after 5 minutes the second time. The recording said they were having some trouble in some areas and were working on it, it should be back in 2-3 hours and to call back if it wasn't.

Fine, I went to the grocery store, which I really needed to do after being gone for two weeks. Power was still out when I got home, so I grabbed my book and read until it came back. Good thing it's a bright sunny day here.

So that's where I disappeared to [livejournal.com profile] rileysaplank and [livejournal.com profile] shannon730, which you probably figured given the first outage. Hopefully it'll stay on for the rest of the day now so that I can work on my sites. I've got some things to add to Hairy Eyeball and links to update at WDD.

Just popping up to say Hi. I made it in half an hour late yesterday, but that was fine. My mom and I grabbed a light lunch while we waited for my grandpa's plane to come in. He got in a little early. Then we headed back to my mom's. We got the full tour of all of the additions my step-dad has made since we were here last. His current project is rebuilding the garage. He basically built the new, larger, structure around the existing garage is as taking the old one apart as he goes. He's been putting the roof on the new building lately. And he does all of the work himself. We also saw the pond he landscaped by the river, very nice. (Someday I should post pictures of this house. My step-dad is constantly rebuilding and remodeling it.)

My good friend Lisa came from Madison with her sister and daughter. Lisa's a friend I met through my mom (10 years younger than my mom, 25 years older than me, but one of my best friends). She was running late, so we only got to catch up for roughly an hour before we had to go. It was wonderful seeing her and Grace (her daughter who is now 15), even if only for an hour. We went to see the Jewish Home my step-dad designed before dinner. When I was here in November I saw it, but it wasn't finished yet. Now it's complete and people are living in it. It looks amazing. We had dinner at a nearby restaurant where I had a very nice Veal Picata. Oh, since there were six of us, my brother got to drive us around in my mom's BMV Z4 with the top down.

This morning my mom, brother and grandpa are off playing tennis (doubles) with one of my mom's friends. My step-dad just left to go pick up his daughter in Madison. So I'm here with my step-grandma, who's reading the paper. I'll go shower in a minute and then go take my book outside and read by the river.

I hope everyone's Sunday is going well. I don't know if I'll be back online today, but I should be a little bit tomorrow when I'm hanging out at my dad's. (His house is set up for wireless, so I can have my laptop out while we watch Phantom of the Opera on his huge widescreen TV w/surround sound.)

Just popping up to say that I'll be offline most of today. In about half an hour I'm heading out to go to a BBQ at a co-worker's house. Should be fun, and interesting. I've worked with C for five years now and this is the first family function I've been invited to. It'll be nice to put faces to the crazy stories I've been hearing for years. I think that I'm also going to be the only white person there. On Friday she was saying that there's going to be 25 people there, all family, plus me. Apparently her family is very excited to meet me too. Her nephew was writing a country/rap song for me, and her mother was choreographing it.

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans!

Hi, me again. *waves* Wow, three posts in one day.

I've had an interesting day. My neighbor, Kathy, knocked on my door around 1:30 to invite me to go sit out in the sun with her. It's in the mid-90s here today, with not a cloud in the sky, and a slight breeze. She gave me some iced tea and we sat outside for like 45 minutes, just chatting and sunbathing. I even remembered to put sunscreen on first.

I asked if she had any plans for the rest of the afternoon. She didn't, so she went to the movies with me! (I'd been planning on going by myself today.) I got to go to a chick flick with another chick! We saw "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and it was very good. I got teary-eyed.

Happy Mother's Day to the mothers on my flist!

My own mother is on her way back home now. Today we hung my pictures on the wall so my apartment now has some of my personality showing in it. We had a very nice brunch. Then we went shopping, again. This time we went to a different mall. Didn't get anything there, but we went over to DSW and I found a pair of black sandals that I'll be able to wear to work. Yipee! None of the ones that I had seem appropriate for work.

Now I'm going to catch up on my reading from over the weekend.

It's here!

Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy. That's me right now. My couch was just delivered!!!!! I am ridiculously excited by this. When the delivery guys were outside getting it my heart was beating so fast in excitement. It took a little manoevering to get it through the apartment door, but it worked. When they left, after sitting on it for a few minutes, I started to literally bounce up and down on my toes, actually leaving the ground a couple of times, while squeeing to my dad.

Wanna see it? )

I'm gonna play hooky the rest of today. I brought some work home with me, just in case they came more towards the 3pm part of my 10-3 window. I'll finish my typing, then go run the errands I was going to after work because my mom's coming tomorrow for the weekend. (Another thing I'm very excited about.) I realized I have no more clean towels, so I'll go to the laundromat and go to the grocery store.

Oh, this means that I probably won't be online much this weekend. My mom doesn't get my online life. She thinks it's a waste of time and the you guys aren't "real" friends. I'm still working on convincing her otherwise.

She's gonna help me with the decorating I've been putting off while waiting for the couch - hanging pictures, buying curtains, etc. I also made reservations at a nice restaurant for Mother's Day brunch.
dragonydreams: (Lindsey - Eat Your Heart Out)
I figured I'd try to be productive today, get some errands done before it snows here. Well, apparently I every other single person in Watertown had the same thought today.

I finally got my butt over to Best Buy to exchange the copy of The Last Samuri that I got for Hanukkah because I already had it. I had some gift certificates for there too so I went on a movie shopping spree. I picked up Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (extended version), Garden State, and The Fifth Element. I've been waiting years for The Fifth Element to be released with extras and they finally came out with "The Ultimate Edition" which has over 2 hours of extras. Woo Hoo!

Then I headed to the grocery store. This is where my subject line comes in. The parking lot was so full at my regular supermarket that people were parking in the driving lanes. I said "Screw it," and went to a store at the other side of town. Same thing. I was turning onto the street to get to the parking lot when I see half a dozen cars queued up to get in. "Screw it," was said again and I came home. It's not like I have no food in the apartment. Most of what I was getting was restocking stuff anyway, not things I use every day.

Watch, we'll probably end up getting only a couple of inches instead of the foot of snow they're predicting. I certainly hope so.

At least I picked up the one thing I really needed at the convenience store during the week: vanilla. Now I can finish making the cookies I started last weekend. (I didn't realize until I went to get the vanilla that my former used all of mine up without telling me, or just took it with them.) As soon as the butter/sugar mixture softens up I'll be able to finish my chocolate chip cookies.

P.S. Look at the new icon I finished this morning *points to icon on this post*

P.P.S. Go vote at [livejournal.com profile] joss_stills! One of them is mine, but I can't say which one.
