The [livejournal.com profile] emeraldswan Fic-a-thon

Hi All,

We have had so many ficathons in the past and while challenging and entertaining, they were for our own amusement.

Now we have a chance to make a real difference in a friends life, on and offline. As some of you know Emmy’s laptop died, taking with it all her original and fanfic, images, icons and manips. She is heartbroken and cannot get a replacement anytime soon.

We can, however, make a difference. By signing up and committing your time and considerable talents we can raise the funds needed to get a new PC to someone who has been a steadfast friend to so many of us.

Not only is it the time of giving, with Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, Yule, whatever you celebrate, but this is also a time to pull together and help those in need. While we understand that a new PC isn't a technical 'need', we do want to help out.

Please join the cause and gather your pledges. The time approaches.

1. Authors have until 12/24/04 to join the [livejournal.com profile] swan_a_thon LJ community at http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=swan_a_thon
2. Authors must obtain a minimum of one pledge and post their pledges to the community prior to the start of the ficathon. There will be a post on the community where all pledges should be posted as a comment.
3. Pledge posts should include, author name or LJ user id, pledge name (or LJ user id) and email address, and pledge amount per completed fic.
4. More than one pledge may be posted in a comment as long as they are for the same author.
5. Minimum pledge is $1.00 per completed fic.
6. Pledge postings will take place from Saturday, December 18, 2004 to Friday, midnight PST December 25, 2004.
7. Authors will have one week from the end of the pledging period to write as many fics as possible during this week.
8. All fic must be 500 words or more.
9. All pairings and fandoms are welcome (especially Jossverse and Harry Potter since those are two of Emmy’s favorites) but we do request that fic contributed to the Emeraldswan Fic-a-thon contain no incest or rape.
10. Authors must post all fic before then ficathon ends on January 1, 2005 at midnight PST. Posting access will be removed at that time.
11. Fics will be reviewed to see if they are completed by the moderators
12. Once a count of fic per author is achieved, persons who pledged will be notified via email with payment instructions.
13. All payments will be made to a Paypal account on behalf of Emmy.
14. All payments are requested to be received within 5 days of notification.
15. All proceeds are to be used to purchase a desktop or laptop. Paypal’s fees will be automatically deducted from each transaction. Paypal accepts only credit card and checking account payments. Pledges will need one of these in order to render payment.
16. An account summary will be provided once all payments are received and the item purchased and shipped.

that's a very nice thing you're doing. I'd help if I weren't already reeling here from being asked by WI to file for indigent paperwork because I make so little in order to get the medications I need badly and can no longer afford and I was told today they can't even tell me if I'll have a job in three weeks. Sigh.

That's what I thought. Emmy was my first online friend, so I really would like to help her get a working computer.

If you'd like to do the story part of it, I can pledge you. (I asked one of the mods, and they said as long as someone pledged at least $1 you could participate.) No pressure though.

That really sucks about your job. Even though I saw that your class passed their exams? I'll keep my fingers crossed that it works out. What would you do if it doesn't? You just moved to WI for this job.

Given the deadline there's no way I could possibly make it but thanks. (I'm wondering if this is the Emmy I know too for that matter).

I'll be looking for a new job in Jan. regardless. I was only supposed to be here one semester anyhow. Next semester was a bonus so I didn't look to be a mid-season replacement anywhere because I was supposed to be here. I'm just hoping for a more permanent job, you know one where my boss doesn't have to buy me food because I couldn't afford to eat tonight.

That's understandable. Most people are just doing drabbles, but I don't do them. So I'm doing a whole story, but it'll probably be a short one. This is for [livejournal.com profile] emeraldswan, not sure if it's who you're thinking of.

Where are you looking for your next job? If you've got offers out in the Boston area, I'm still looking for roommates in Watertown.

Nope different Emmy (I know of at least 3 on LJ)

I'll keep that in mind but I'll be honest probably not because of one WEIRD thing. While looking for jobs I notice one thing, there's no cost of living adjustments for the salaries. Most are between 30-45K no matter if it's in the middle of nowhere or it's L.A. I could live on 30K here no problem. I couldn't last 4 months in L.A. or Boston on that. It's so odd.

That is weird. The cost of living is one of the things I hate about living in the Boston area. Everything's so fricking expensive. I could move back to WI and pay what I do for 1/3 of my apartment for an entire 1 bedroom in Milwaukee.

No kidding. Yeah I saw on that meme you were from Milwaukee. I didn't know that. I used to live in Madison which I loved. I'm a tad too far north here in Rhinelander. And the teaching thing is just odd. I don't get it so places like NY, MA and CA tend to go in the noway in hell pile as I screen for jobs as does AL but for other reasons

I think we actually had this conversation like a year ago, but I don't blame you for forgetting, I have a habit of doing that too.

I went to college in Madison (University of Wisconsin). It's a great town. Are you considering moving to that area again? One of my really good friends lives there, so every other time I go home I try to swing by Madison for a day or overnight.

I would like to be right now I can't find a job there (I can't teach at a place like UofWI because I'm not a researcher). I still ahve to get down there and see my friends.
