We had a nice Hanukkah party Sunday night. My step-mom made her usual yummy brisket and latkes.

Here is the majority of my haul. I also got a picture my step-sister made, a calendar and an Amazon gift card. My step-mom also made a gorgeous, colorful scarf.

Yesterday we walked over the shopping street a few blocks away and after a stop at Starbucks, wandered around the independent bookstore. They have a fun way of naming the sections.

I picked up copies of the first thee books in the Miss Peregrine series for $7.99 each.

In the afternoon we went to see Rogue One. I liked it much more than I expected to. Without being spoilery, I really liked how it fit into the overall saga. After the movie I got my Rocky Rocco's pizza fix.

Today we're going to an art museum that features Wisconsin artists. The featured artist does photo-realism paintings.

Not in my apartment, but in my state. Permanently. She and my step-dad arrived on Monday. They didn't bring all their stuff out yet, just the kitchen stuff, some comfy chairs a bed and a card table and chairs. My step-dad will be completely remodeling the first floor, knocking down walls, adding a bathroom, etc.

Their house is an hour north of me in Gloucester, MA. Yesterday I went up to spend the day with them. We had lunch and then my mom and I walked through the cemetery behind the house, through some woods, to the ocean. There are large rocks leading down to the water. We sat on the rocks for a bit before heading back. Then we drove into Rockport, the next town over from them. We found a place to park and walked around the touristy area. I got some Raspberry Lemonade taffy at a candy store. My asked me to stay for dinner too, so I did.

It was a nice day. It'll be interesting living in the same state. I've been out here for 15 years and while part of me is still a little nervous about us being so close, at least she's an hour away. My mom and I get along better when we don't see each other all the time. At least that used to be true.

I can't decide what to do today. I officially need to go buy new jeans because my old ones finally died at the inner thighs. But I also need to make cookies (or something) with my dead bananas because they're stinky. But I also need to clean my apartment because my mom is staying with me Wednesday night while she is leading a tour and the group is staying in a hotel a few blocks from me. (I'm going to join the tour next weekend when they go up to Maine and go to the Portland Art Museum where we'll tour Winslow Homer's home. Except I'll be driving myself 3 hours up there since they're going from New Hampshire and I'll be going from home.) My calves hurt from walking up and down hills yesterday, so I don't want to walk around shopping, so that probably isn't going to happen. So cleaning and baking it will be. Even if it is really sunny out today.

I'm home

Bet most of you didn't even know I was gone. I took a quick trip to visit my family over the weekend. The goal for the weekend was to go through my stuff that's in my mom's basement. My brother and his girlfriend came in for the weekend too. Read more... )

My mom is going to drive me nuts. She emailed me with the subject line, "I know, I know..." so I knew it was going to be a guilt trip thing. She wants me to come home for her 10th anniversary party on August 6th. She says:

1. Would you come in for our Anniversary if I pay for the airline ticket?
2. Now for a harder question: Could you take Monday off?
3. Now for an even harder question: Would you mind very much getting home late on Monday?

1. I've said that I can't afford to pay for a plane ticket, but would consider coming if she paid for it.
2. No, I won't take Monday off. I'll be out for 3 days the previous week for WriterCon and I will not ask to take off a day a week later. It's not fair to my clients or my co-workers who have to cover for me. I've told her this before. I will not do it.
3. Moot point since I refuse to take Monday off.

Apparently it's only $215, but I'd have to a) leave Monday and b) get in at 10:46pm. It'd be hundreds of dollars more to fly back Sunday. I don't care if I have the vacation time, I do not want to ask for even a day off so soon after being away. Granted my boss would probably say yes, but I do not want to ask.

Hi, I'm back from the wilds of Minnesota. My grandmother's funeral was sad, but cathartic. And despite the circumstances, it was wonderful to be with my entire family (on my dad's side). I also managed to read my entire book in three sittings, aka flights. Of course, now I can't find the last book in the series in the store - or at least they didn't have it at the two I called today. I'll just have to break the series for my upcoming trip.

Now for the favor... I made a file in my memories of everyone's Wish Lists here. Please take a look and if you had one and it's not here, then please send me a link to the entry. It's possible it was buried with another meme and I just didn't see it. If your list has changed at all, then just make a comment here with what you might like from me. Or, if you didn't make a list and would like something from me, leave a comment. It appears that my writing muse is slowly returning, so I may even be able to pull off a one-shot for you.

P.S. Yes, I know a lot of people have started giving/receiving prezzies already, but I've been a little too preoccupied to do anything about it yet. I still probably won't be giving anything out for at least another week.

I am back home safe and sound. My dad was thoroughly surprised to find me and my brother standing in the entrance to the restaurant Saturday night. He said it was the best 60th birthday ever. I hadn't been home in almost a year, so it was especially great being there. It always shocks me how much the city changes each time I visit.

When I got home tonight I saw that the winners for the Bodice Ripper Awards has just been announced. Loss and Love won for Best Het Pairing Fic! It was the ONLY Willow/Giles fic to place. Squeee!!!!

I have made it back safe and sound from my trip up to Vermont for my family reunion. Believe it or not, I had a really great time. We were in a ski lodge with five bedrooms and four full baths. There were 11 of us total, so I had to share a room with my brother, but that was fine - the room had bunk beds and a queen - I made him take the bunk bed.

I was able to do a lot of reading. I'm on chapter sixteen of the fifth Harry Potter book. We watched the Olympics every night (and sometimes during the day too). There was a pond not far away that we visited for one morning, and we went shopping in the "nearby" towns (I even found three new tops at one of the outlets). And believe it or not, I was able to spend a little time writing one afternoon. This means that the last chapter of Tumblin' Down is half-way finished. (No, I didn't get to start either of my W/S stories.)

My brother came back to Boston with me and is going to stay at my apartment until my mom comes back down on Wednesday, then he'll fly home with her. This also means that I probably still won't be online much for the next few days, as work will be hellish now that one of my co-workers quit and Friday was her last day - meaning we have to take over her accounts until someone new is hired.
